I found out, after finishing this book, that this is the second book in a two-part series. My copy didn't say anything about that, so I'm letting you know. The first book is, apparently, Dreadnought!, and it's a book that I also have in my collection, but I haven't read it yet.

That being said, I still enjoyed this book, even though I hadn't read the first. I never realized, reading it, that I should have read one before it. The book does reference some past events, but that's not unusual for Star Trek novels, in general. In addition, I just assumed that some of the events were either fictionalized (and we were just supposed to go along with the references, which was fine), or they had come from episodes that I'd forgotten, since it has been some time since I last watched TOS.

At any rate, I enjoyed Piper, even though she became a little difficult to deal with as the book progressed. I hate to use the term "Mary Sue," but it's pretty accurate in describing the character, especially as she progressed. I would enjoy reading further stories with her, though I might enjoy them better if her character were just a bit more fleshed out and "consistent."

Overall, this was a good book. It was light and easy to read (as far as Star Trek novels go). There was enough action that I didn't get bogged down or bored. I haven't gone back to read the first in the series, but I don't doubt that I will read it eventually. I'd recommend this to a fan of Star Trek novels.

I'm including the link, but I receive nothing from the sales of this book.
