Let's talk about this hot mess of an Oz book.
Seriously, this is the worst of the Oz books that I've read so far. I would like to pretend that this one was "OK," but really I just forced myself to finish it because I felt like I should, for some reason, before moving on to the next.
The three new characters for this book (beyond the inconsequential characters they meet in each of the "adventures" they have) are Zeb, Jim, Eureka, and, arguably, nine little piglets.
Zeb was flat, at best. Jim was a horse, and he was sometimes downright disagreeable. Eureka was a kitten and, honestly, I saw no redeeming qualities for her. I never thought I'd really dislike a kitten, but here we are. The best characters, really, were the nine piglets, and that's just because they were cute.
Dorothy ends up inside the Earth, before making it to Oz, and the "adventures" of the characters seem really random. There's no real connection to them, and they're very unpleasant. I read the Oz books as bedtime stories, and I have to admit that this one just wasn't doing it for me as far as making me feel ready for a good night of sleep.
All in all, I'm not kidding when I say that this Oz book was a hot mess. It's the fourth I've read, and it's the worst so far. I hope that the fifth greatly improves, or I may have to rethink my plan to read the whole series.
I'm including the link, in case you want to read this, but I can't honestly recommend it. It's free (at least right now), and I really don't think you want to pay much more than $0 for this experience. I don't earn anything from the sales--free or otherwise.
