I received an ARC of this book for free, and I am leaving my review voluntarily.
I was initially attracted to this book because of the cover and the title. I know the old adage is that you can't judge a book by its cover, but I will certainly do so.
The description of the book was intriguing, and that's why I asked to join the review team. I will admit, however, that I misinterpreted the description a little. I expected this to be cozy and heartwarming. While there were heartwarming moments, I found the overall tone of the book to be much more dark and depressing than I had anticipated. A world without readers is, in all honesty, a sad place. I think, too, that it also "hit home" because the possibility of such a thing doesn't seem too far-fetched.
Overall, this was an enjoyable book packed with literary references that any well-read person will enjoy. The concept was (although a bit depressing) honestly something that I could see happening in our society. I enjoyed the book, and I can recommend it to anyone who thinks that they would enjoy it, though I would definitely let them know that it's a bit heavier than, perhaps, they might think it will be.
