This was a DNF and a "maybe later" for me.
Let me explain.
The book was not horrible in any way. It was, in the beginning, rather charming.
It's well-written. There are a lot of characters with a lot of character traits that they bring to the table. You can tell that the author is really gearing up for plot lines and character development that will carry them through an entire series. Much of that series, in fact, seems to have already been written, since there are already four books to the series.
So why am I backing out before I've reached the end?
As things were really building up, I realized I wasn't attached, yet, to the characters and their plight. I didn't dislike the book, but I was reading it because I felt like I needed to keep reading, because people say it's wonderful. There were other things I wanted to read.
Also, I knew I wasn't looking to get involved in the whole series right now, so that was another reason that I decided to shelve this as something that I may come back to at some point.
This was a lot like a meme to me. This was the "I want Star Trek." and "We have Star Trek at home." kind of situation. This was Star Trek at home, and I still have tons of Trek to catch up on in my personal collection, so I decided to duck out early, here, and get back to that.
However, I fully recognize that's on me, and I want to make it clear that there was nothing wrong with this book, it simply wasn't the right book (at the right time) for me. I do think plenty of other people would love it!
